Peptide scams and how to avoid them

Researchers have bought peptides from illegal sellers and put them through a mass spectrometer. This is what came back, what never came at all, and the check that catches each pattern.

The short answer. A peptide scam is a sale where what arrives is not what was described: nothing at all, a different compound, or a vial holding far less than the label claims. Four patterns account for almost all of it. Non-delivery, often with a second invoice to clear customs. Underfilled vials. Purity far below the stated figure. And a certificate that belongs to no lot you received.

Most writing about peptide scams is a list of vibes. This page is a list of measurements. Researchers have placed real orders with illegal online sellers, waited, and run whatever arrived through a mass spectrometer. Their numbers are the closest thing this market has to evidence, and they are all public.

Work pattern-first. There are only about six ways a peptide order goes wrong, each one has a documented signature, and each one is caught by a different check. Of 1,080 search-result links screened by Ashraf and colleagues in 2024, 317 led to online pharmacies and 134 of those went to 59 illegal ones.

What are the most common peptide scams?

Six patterns, and they are not equally likely. The first two are outright fraud and the money is gone at the moment you send it. The middle three are quality failures, where something arrives and it is not what the label says. The last one is about the reputation the seller builds to get you there.

A seventh sits underneath all of them: the reputation that got you to the checkout. The Federal Trade Commission's rule at 16 CFR Part 465 took effect on 21 October 2024 and names the conduct directly, prohibiting fake or false consumer reviews, buying positive or negative reviews, insider reviews, company-controlled review websites, review suppression and fake indicators of social media influence. Non-delivery is not a peptide problem. It is an e-commerce problem that peptides sit inside. The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center logged 49,572 non-payment and non-delivery complaints in 2024, with $785.4 million in reported losses across every category of goods. Its own definition is the one to hold onto: payment is sent, and goods are never received, or are of lesser quality.

What happened when researchers actually bought peptides online?

Researchers have done the obvious thing three times: buy from the sellers, then measure what turns up. Those three purchase programs are reported across four of the six papers below. The other two measured material nobody bought, a seized vial and a European safety database, because each catches a failure a test purchase cannot. They span a decade and two very different markets, the doping-adjacent research peptides and the newer weight-loss compounds, and they agree with each other.

The Belgian impurity study is the one worth reading in full, because contamination is the failure a buyer cannot see, smell or reason about. Its finding was not just weak peptide:

This comprehensive study showed that these type of falsified drugs not only have a high variation in amount of drugs per unit and a low purity (ranging between 5% and 75% for cysteine containing peptides), but also contained the known toxic class one elemental impurities arsenic (As) and lead (Pb).

The same paper reports concentrations reaching up to ten times the ICH toxicity limit for parenteral drugs, and that speciation confirmed the arsenic was present in its more toxic inorganic form. Nothing about a vial's appearance carries that information, which is the argument for a document rather than an impression. Underfill is the quieter one. It is invisible by construction, because a peptide is a small mass of white powder at the bottom of a vial and nobody can eyeball a milligram. Breindahl and colleagues bought melanotan II from three shops, each claiming 10 mg, and weighed what was there:

The total amount of melanotan II in vials ranged between 4.32 and 8.84 mg, although each shop claimed that vials contained 10 mg melanotan II.

Read that as a pricing fact as well as a quality one. A vial at half the stated mass is a vial at double the stated price per milligram, which is how a cheap listing stops being cheap. What drives peptide prices works through the cost floor that makes underfill profitable.

How do you spot a peptide scam before you pay?

By reading the checkout rather than the marketing. The strongest signals in the published work were not claims about quality at all. They were the mechanics of how the seller wanted to be paid and what it did not ask you for.

Two of those are worth their own sentence. The payment method decides whether a bad outcome is recoverable, and it is the only variable on this list you control completely. And a seller that never asks for anything is not being generous: not one of the six sellers in the 2024 sample asked for a prescription or any health information before selling a prescription-only drug, which tells you what kind of business you are in before anything is measured.

Scale, not anecdote. The top thirty domains affiliated with the illegal sellers in that study drew over 4.7 million visits in a single quarter of 2023, and the top five took 58% of that traffic. This is not a fringe corner of the internet that careful people avoid by accident. It is the search results page.

Is a cheap peptide always a scam?

No, and treating price as the verdict is how people get this backwards. A low price is a question about which line item was removed, not proof that anything was. Third-party testing is a real per-lot cost, and the cheapest way to remove it is not to do it, so the useful follow-up is which laboratory tested the lot rather than how the number compares to the next listing.

The same discipline applies to the word scam itself. A seller that will not name its testing laboratory has not been shown to be fraudulent. It has left a specific claim unverified, which is a more useful finding than a verdict because it tells you what to ask next. Two categories deserve separating out. Compounds with no approved medicine behind them, such as BPC-157 or TB-500, are sold as research chemicals and the whole market is unregulated, so documentation is the only differentiator. Compounds that are approved medicines elsewhere, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, have a genuine counterfeit trade attached, because there is a branded product worth faking. The World Health Organization confirmed falsified batches of Ozempic in Brazil and the United Kingdom in October 2023 and in the United States in December 2023. Falsified medical products deliberately misrepresent their identity, composition or source. These products are often created and distributed with the intent to deceive consumers for financial gain.

The WHO's own estimate is that at least 1 in 10 medicines in low- and middle-income countries is substandard or falsified. That figure is not a statement about research peptides, and we are not going to pretend it is. It is the base rate for a supply chain with regulators, inspectors and customs in it, which is a useful thing to hold in mind about one without.

What can you do once it has already gone wrong?

Less than you would like, and the order matters. Nothing below recovers a vial; the first two steps are about the money and the last two are about knowing what actually happened.

The published case reports are a reminder that the downside is not only financial. Sterckx and De Keyser described an 18-year-old who obtained semaglutide from an unregulated online pharmacy and self-administered it by counting clicks on the pen, and who was admitted ten days later with euglycemic ketoacidosis after three days of intractable vomiting. Zinzi and colleagues found that 89.3% of the adverse reactions reported to EudraVigilance alongside counterfeit semaglutide were classed as serious, with seven fatal outcomes.

Those are reports, not a controlled comparison, and a spontaneous reporting database cannot tell you how often anything happens. It can tell you what has been reported at all, which for an unregulated purchase is the only safety information that exists. Whether anyone repeats the Ashraf test-purchase design on research peptides rather than on semaglutide. Every hard number on this page about the weight-loss market comes from studies built to buy a prescription drug without a prescription, and the research-chemical market has never been sampled that way at scale. We are also watching whether the FTC's reviews rule reaches this category, since nothing about a research-chemical storefront exempts it from 16 CFR Part 465.

Does a research use only label mean the seller is legitimate?

No. Research use only is a labeling category, not a credential, and every seller in this market uses some version of it. It describes what the material may be sold for. It says nothing about who tested the lot, what the vial contains, or whether the certificate matches the batch you received. What research use only actually covers is the longer version.
